10.5 Features and Enhancements
Automatic
Updates
Choose Automatic
Updates Available from the MAGic Help menu to search for new
versions of the software on the Web. MAGic then checks to see if any updates
are available and displays a list for you to choose from. The list of
updates includes the file size and details about what the update contains.
You can then choose to download and install any of the new software versions
in order to keep MAGic up-to-date. Related material, such as DAISY training
materials, can also be downloaded and updated. This service will help
Freedom Scientific make minor changes and improvements to MAGic much more
frequently.
Internet access and
administrative rights are required to check for updates. Automatic updates
are available for the English version of MAGic only. At this time, Automatic
updates are only supported under Windows XP.
Tip:
If you want to disable Automatic Updates for any reason, open
the File menu and choose Preferences. In the Preferences dialog, clear
the Automatic Updates Available check box.

Startup
Wizard
The MAGic Startup
Wizard is a helpful tool that allows you to configure specific MAGic parameters,
such as automatically starting MAGic when you turn on your computer, or
install training material (over two and a half hours of basic training
in DAISY format), or load various other MAGic items and functions. During
a new MAGic installation, the Startup Wizard appears after you complete
product activation. However, it can always be accessed later from the
MAGic Help menu by pressing ALT+H and choosing Startup
Wizard.

Keyboard Functions in Internet Explorer
Freedom Scientific
has made a significant modification to Internet Explorer keyboard functionality.
In previous MAGic releases, MAGic followed the built-in tabbing order
of Internet Explorer, placing focus in the address bar and tool bar before
going to Web page links. With MAGic 10.5, pressing TAB
now takes you to the first link or control on the page, skipping over
the address bar and tool bar. From a usability stand point, this is much
more efficient than previous MAGic releases.
Pressing SHIFT+TAB
still allows you to move backwards to the tool bar and address bar. Also,
if you tab all the way through the page, MAGic will wrap to the address
bar from the last element on the page as expected. This functionality
is part of the Internet Explorer design and has not been altered by MAGic.

to keep pace with the latest developments from Microsoft. Internet Explorer

Traditional
Networking Support
MAGic 10.5 reinstates
traditional network support. This traditional support places the MAGic
program, as well as all user settings, on a network server, thus allowing
users to utilize their settings from the server throughout the network.
Using the MAGic Network Administrator tool, you can setup and manage MAGic
user accounts. For more information, refer to the Network MAGic section
in the help file.
Return

Support
for Roaming User Profiles
A user profile contains
user settings, such as your printer configurations, e-mail and application
preferences, shortcuts, Web browser favorites, and documents. A roaming
user profile, which is configured by a network administrator, lets you
to log on to any computer within a domain and then automatically be presented
with your user settings and documents.
MAGic 10.5 and higher
now supports Microsoft's roaming user profiles model. This means that
your MAGic preferences can be copied to a shared folder and retrieved
by you as you access any computer within your group. When you log off
the computer, your profile and changes are copied from your local Document
and Settings folder back to the shared folder.
Before you can use
a roaming profile, a network administrator must complete the following
tasks:
- Create a shared
folder that will store the roaming profiles
- Configure the
user accounts to use roaming profiles

installed with MAGic. By default, at least one DAISY book (FSReader Getting
Started) is also installed.
MAGic 10.5 introduces
the following new global play, pause, fast forward, and rewind commands
when playing audio DAISY books using FSReader. These commands can be performed
from within any program as long as FSReader Demo is running.
- CTRL+P.
Press CTRL+P to begin reading the book. Press CTRL+P
again to pause reading the book.
Note: As long as FSReader Demo is running, CTRL+P

Demo is active, you must use an application’s Print command.
- CTRL+PERIOD.
Press CTRL+PERIOD to fast forward five seconds.
- CTRL+COMMA.

Fixes in MAGic 10.5.374 (First update)
The following item was fixed in this update:
- Resolved an issue that only appeared when using Internet Explorer 6 in a Windows 2000 environment. Previously, if tabbing through a Web page while using JAWS with MAGic, JAWS would use the name of the first link it encountered for all subsequent links on the page. Also, if you were using a braille display and issued the Say Current Line command (INSERT+UP ARROW), JAWS would correctly say any link appearing on the line, but would show on the braille display the name of the first link. JAWS now correctly speaks Web links as you tab through or use the Say Current Line command on a Web page.
