Differences Between PAC Mate Release 4.1 and 4.0

PAC Mate™ release 4.1 is a free upgrade to those who purchased Release 4.0, have a PAC Mate that is currently under warranty, or have a current Annual Software Agreement (ASA). See What does it cost? for more information.

This page addresses several issues that were found in 4.0 and quickly fixed in release 4.1.

Fixes in this Release

What does it cost?

The 4.1 update costs $115. It is a free download to BX and QX series PAC Mate owners who own release 4.0 or whose units are under warranty or Annual Software Agreement (ASA). Do not download this update if you have a PAC Mate BNS or TNS. Also, if you received your new PAC Mate BX or QX model after July 2006, you should already be running 4.1. There is no need to update.

To verify what version is installed on your PAC Mate, do one of the following:

  • Press JAWS Key+ENTER, A on the QX or DOTS 2-4 CHORD, DOT 1 on the BX. These commands are valid for PAC Mate 4.0.

    or
  • Press JAWS Key+F1, A on the QX or DOTS 1-4-5-6 CHORD, DOT 1 on the BX. These commands are valid for PAC Mate 3.0 or earlier.

Speaking the Correct Braille Characters in Braille Study Mode

When Braille Study mode is turned on, the PAC Mate now announces and spells the braille character that is positioned at the selected cursor router button. Previously, the braille character to the left of the cursor router was spoken.

Navrow 13 and Navrow 23 Braille Display Buttons and Braille Study Mode

On a PAC Mate 20 and PAC Mate 40 braille display, the buttons located immediately above the braille cells are the cursor routing buttons. The buttons above the cursor routing buttons are the navrow buttons. When using Braille Study mode, the navrow buttons spell and speak the word that is aligned with the braille cell.

In this release, Navrow 13 on the 20-cell display, and Navrow 23 on the 40-cell display spell and speak the associated braille cell word. Previously, these navrow buttons would toggle on and off Grade 2 braille.

Improvements to Continuous Braille Mode

Continuous Braille mode provides an uninterrupted stream of braille until the end of a paragraph is reached. (Note that this only works in block style paragraphs. For example, at least two hard returns must be reached before the braille stream is terminated.) This mode ignores any hard or soft carriage returns that appear within a paragraph. This is useful when formatting and layout are not important, for example, when reading an e-book.

In the previous release, leading spaces, trailing spaces, and blank lines would cause Continuous Braille mode to jump around and repeat previously displayed text. This no longer occurs in this release.

Moving Backwards in FSEdit

You can now move the cursor backward in an FSEdit document based on character, line, or word position. In the previous release, an error message would appear when you entered the minus sign to indicate a negative number for backward cursor movement. The following describes how to move the cursor backward or forward in an FSEdit document.

To move the cursor on a PAC Mate QX, type CTRL+SHIFT+G X Y, (for the BX, type DOTS 3-4-5-6 CHORD, X Y) where X is a negative number, indicating how far back the cursor will move, or a positive number indicating how far forward the cursor will move, and Y is the letter C for character, L for line, and W for word, which indicates the type of cursor movement.

Auto Save and FSEdit

If you move focus from or exit an FSEdit file without first saving it, the Auto Save function uses up to the first 21 characters of the file as the file name. The file is saved to main memory in the My Documents folder. In the previous release, the Auto Save function was not being performed when focus moved from a previously unsaved file or when the unsaved file was closed.

Saving Secondary Language Settings

When a secondary language is installed, changes to its current settings are now accepted by the PAC Mate the first time you save the new settings.

Previously, you had to save the changes twice for them to take effect.
