This page describes how to install the FaceToFace application onto your iPAQ.
However, before this can occur, you must first verify and configure specific
Bluetooth settings on your iPAQ. The remainder of this page describes how to
install and configure the FaceToFace application onto your iPAQ using Microsoft
ActiveSync.
Before you Begin
The following is required to install and operate FaceToFace.
- An iPAQ with Windows Mobile 5.0, with docking cradle
or USB cable
(these devices have built-in Bluetooth technology)
- Freedom Scientific FaceToFace application
(available on FaceToFace product CD)
- A Bluetooth ID name for the PAC Mate
- FaceToFace Authorization code
- FaceToFace user name for the PAC Mate
- Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5 or later on your computer
Checking the Bluetooth Settings on the iPAQ
The HP iPAQs have built-in Bluetooth technology
and do not require setup of a Bluetooth CompactFlash (CF) card. However, before
using your iPAQ, you must verify that Bluetooth is turned on and, if necessary,
provide a Bluetooth device ID name for the iPAQ. Do the following to check the
iPAQs Bluetooth configuration.
- Power on the iPAQ, and tap the Bluetooth icon, located at the bottom
right corner of the iPAQs Today screen. The Bluetooth main menu items appear.
- Tap Bluetooth Settings on the Bluetooth main menu.
The General page appears; make sure that Bluetooth is turned
on.
- At the bottom of the screen is a series of tabs. Tap on Accessibility to switch to the Accessibility page, and verify that the iPAQ has a
Device Identification Name, for example, "Joes iPAQ." Note:
The default name is "Pocket_PC." This name entered in this edit box will
later be used to identify the iPAQ as a Bluetooth device.
- Make sure that the following items are selected in the Accessibility
section of this page:
- Allow other devices to connect
- All devices
- Other devices can discover me
- Tap on Services at the bottom of the screen to open the Services dialog box and tap Serial Port. Make sure that Enable service
is the only selected option. If any additional options are selected, tap each one to unselect it until only Enable Service is selected.
- Double tap OK to save these settings and return to the Today screen.
Installing FaceToFace on the iPAQ using ActiveSync
The following describes how to download the FaceToFace application from your
computer to your iPAQ. Note: You must use ActiveSync version 4.5 or later in order to synchronize with the iPAQ. If you synchronize a PAC Mate running software version 4.1 or earlier with the same PC, you will no longer be able to perform a wireless sync using WIFI, however, you will still be able to synchronize wirelessly using Bluetooth.
- From your computer, make a Standard or Guest ActiveSync partnership with
the iPAQ.
- Insert the FaceToFace CD into your computers CD-ROM drive.
- From the Windows Start menu, select the Run command and enter D:\FaceToFaceSetupABC.EXE,
where D is the letter of your CD-ROM drive, and
ABC is the FaceToFace release and version number,
to start the FaceToFace software installation.
- The FaceToFace Pocket PC installation dialog box appears. Select the Next
button.
- The License Agreement dialog box appears. Select the "I accept the terms
in the license agreement" radio button, and choose the Finish button to begin installation.
- Once The FaceToFace software is downloaded
to the iPAQ, select OK to close the installation dialog box on the PC. After a few more seconds, the iPAQ will display a message stating that FaceToFace was successfully installed.
- The software is now available on the iPAQ. From the Start menu, select
Programs and choose FaceToFace.
To continue setting up the FaceToFace application, go to the Starting FaceToFace
for the First Time on the iPAQ section for more information.
Starting FaceToFace for the First Time on the
iPAQ
When you start FaceToFace for the first time on the iPAQ, you must do the following:
- Enter an Authorization number
- Enter a name that identifies the iPAQ to all FaceToFace users.
- Determine if you want to configure one of the iPAQs thumb buttons to be
a hot button for the FaceToFace application. This allows you to quickly launch
the application by pressing one button on the iPAQ.
For a deaf/blind user, an iPAQ hotkey is the best way to quickly launch the
FaceToFace application since it does not require sighted assistance.
The following describes how to complete these tasks.
- To start FaceToFace on the iPAQ for the first time, open the Start menu,
select Programs and choose FaceToFace.
- When you start FaceToFace for the first time, you must enter an authorization
number for the application, which you previously received in an email when
you requested an Authorization number from the PMActivate.com site. The number
is case-sensitive. When prompted, enter the authorization number, and choose
OK.
- Next, enter a user name for the iPAQ, for example, "Joes iPAQ,"
and choose OK. This identifier will appear before each message typed
on the iPAQ. The user name can be up to 16-characters long. An identifier
that is unique and short is recommended, for example, "Joes iPAQ."
- Next, determine if you want to enable a button on the iPAQ to automatically
launch the FaceToFace application.
Note: For a deaf/blind user, an iPAQ hotkey is the best
way to quickly launch the FaceToFace application since it does not require
sighted assistance.
Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to configure an iPAQ button
for FaceToFace.
Once this is complete, the FaceToFace application appears on the iPAQ screen
with the following prompt: Server mode: Waiting for connection.
- Warm reset the iPAQ. After it restarts, open the FaceToFace application
by pressing the assigned hotkey.
